At first glance you might wonder, \u201cWhat\u2019s the big\u00a0deal about paying a Shiva call? All I have to do is walk in, sit down\u00a0for a few minutes and express my condolences.\u201d It sounds simple,\u00a0but even with the best of intentions, you might say something\u00a0improper or ask inappropriate questions. Out of embarrassment,\u00a0you might opt for condolence cards or in memoriam donations\u00a0from then on. Ultimately, that might deprive another mourner of\u00a0your empathic presence.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #000000;\"> ABOUT THE AUTHOR: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yigal Segal received a Masters Degree in Administrative Science\u00a0from Johns Hopkins University and was ordained by the Ner\u00a0Israel Rabbinical College in Baltimore, Maryland. It\u00a0doesn\u2019t matter what you or others expect. It doesn\u2019t matter what\u00a0conventional wisdom dictates. The way you grieve is the way you\u00a0need to grieve.\u00a0This insight\u00a0is crucial if we are to understand a mourner\u2019s mindset.
